In 2005, a group of citizens self-proclaimed as the “Angry Bears” began a series of projects bearing the same name. The projects aimed at fighting deforestation, reducing illegal tree-cutting, reducing legal tree-cutting (by altering the legislation), reducing the disasters caused by deforestation, increasing the level of citizen involvement (especially that of young citizens) in matters relating to environmental protection, and developing the community spirit.
The projects included holding flash mobs, conducting citizen and mass media information campaigns on the deforestations carried out throughout the country, postcard campaigns (2,000 postcards bearing the addresses of various competent institutions), organizing round tables, training sessions and submitting a large number of notifications.
Thus, the group established a continuous dialogue with the authorities and began working alongside them. As a result, illegal tree-cutting was reduced by more than 20%. Some successes were also registered with the legislation. But the most important achievement was establishing a strong national trend of opinion against deforestation, which caused illegal tree-cutting to decrease considerably. There is also a coherent watchdog-type group, ready to take a stand at any time.
